Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
A note about production swords:
Occasionally, I get questions like, "so, how do your swords compare to Antique Japanese swords?"
There are many similarities. There are also many differences! Practically speaking, the most noticeable difference will be the cost. The least expensive Antique will be many times the cost of the most expensive sword offered on this site. The purchaser needs to focus on exactly what he will be expecting from his sword. It is most important to recognize that all swords offered on this site are REAL WEAPONS that are more than capable of inflicting serious and fatal damage not only to others, but to the user as well! The purchaser warrants that by purchasing from this site, they understand that the sole responsibility for the use or mis-use of any item offered is their own.
Sometimes people email to ask if these swords are capable of withstanding sword to sword contact.
These people scare me a bit! There seems to be a feeling that the original Japanese swords were somehow exempt from damage in combat and that a "real" sword is too! All swords...$200 to $2,000,000 WILL break if misused.
I have had the opportunity to see many of the Japanese style swords that are available as production items today. I honestly believe that the swords that I offer are among the best available in any price range. The purchaser must keep in mind that there is a reason for the price differences of swords. Usually, a higher price indicates either better materials, more attention to detail, or a combination of the two. Will a $200 sword cut the target like a $1,500 sword? Yes, but the $1,500 sword will probably look and feel different doing it! Attention to detail is to be considered when purchasing a sword. You will be using it for a long time...spend the time deciding what your expectations are and order appropriately. It is not fair to yourself to order a $200 sword and expect the look and feel of a $1,500 sword.
Another common question is: "are these swords sharp?"
The answer is yes. This would be simple except that everyone has a different idea of what "sharp" means. These swords are capable of test cuts against the traditional wara straw mats if performed correctly. Will these swords shave you...probably not. Hanwei blades are hand sharpened before being shipped. As there are many people that do the sharpening, there will be differences between them however all meet a minimum sharpness. Are the blades capable of being sharpened to a higher degree than when delivered? Yes. This is the simple truth with ALL Hanwei blades purchased anywhere.
All swords sent to clients are inspected for flaws. None of the swords sold on this site are seconds or returned merchandise.
"What are the little tags attached to the tsuba of the Hanwei Katana and Wakizashi?"
There tags are essentially the "serial number" of the blade. In the event of a manufacturing flaw, this helps the maker track that particular sword through the manufacturing process. These tags should be saved. No sword can be returned without this tag.
How do International Orders work?
This is covered in the second paragraph on this page however, I will elaborate a bit on the obvious...All that I can quote is a shipping and insurance cost for an item shipped outside of the US. I have ABSOLUTELY NO WAY of estimating ANY charges assessed by ANY authority in ANY Country. So that no one misses the meaning here, no price quoted or charged by Ameurasiart includes ANY Customs fees, Duties, VAT taxes or ANY costs to the purchaser other than the actual shipping with insurance, if requested. You will most likely have to pay those things when you receive the sword.
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PURCHASER OUTSIDE OF THE U.S. TO CONTACT CUSTOMS IN THEIR COUNTRY TO DETERMINE IF A SWORD CAN BE LEGALLY SHIPPED TO THEM. ANY FEES, TAXES, ETC. ASSOCIATED WITH THE IMPORTATION OF THE SWORD ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PURCHASER, AND A SWORD CANNOT BE RETURNED FOR REFUND ONCE SHIPPED BECAUSE OF A CUSTOMS PROBLEM OR UNFORESEEN CHARGE IN THE DESTINATION COUNTRY. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE PLACING YOUR ORDER!!
Does Ameurasiart accept American Express Credit Cards?
Until recently, we did accept American Express Credit Cards. We no longer choose to. Let me explain...In November of 2003, a customer used his American Express card to purchase an item. Several days later, it became evident that the item had been lost in the US Mail. My customer and I both agreed that I would try to find a replacement for the item as it was a "retired" collectable Samurai Action Figure. I offered at any time to refund the purchase amount. Unfortunately, I was unable to find a replacement. I immediately refunded the FULL purchase amount to my customer. After checking with American Express to be sure that the transaction had been handled properly, I was informed that they were still going to keep their fees charged to my account for the original sale...something that no reputable credit card company does. When I questioned this action, they informed me that they had earned the fee and suggested that I should have either penalized my customer the same amount, or that I should have expected a problem and purchased additional Postal Insurance to cover their fee! NOT GONNA HAPPEN!! My customer had done nothing wrong and neither had I! I felt it very unprofessional for such a suggestion to have been made. Therefore, to protect myself and my future clients, I will no longer accept American Express. I am sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause.
